Amarga Navida is a straight up Cancion Ranchera, written by Jose Alfredo Jimenez specifically for Amalia Mendoza. However, I like the minimalist Trova Ranchera arrangement here – as oppossed to a more blaring Brass & Violin approach – because its more appropriate for such an intimate song of grief… and because this is the original way in which Rancheras were always song by the people who wrote them.
